The Warwick Police Department was established in 1921. Prior to that the villages of Warwick were policed by constables and sheriffs since 1648. The department currently has 172 sworn police officers supported by 53 civilian employees that provide municipal policing services to a residential population of 81,000.

Preceding the 2016 National Police Memorial week, the Warwick Police Department dedicated a statute and memorial stone to our officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice as a police officer.
Officers John B. Gendron (1902) and Walter G. McQuarry (1911) were both shot and killed in the line of duty. Officer Kenneth R. Fratus (1971), Captain Christopher Feeney (1971) and Officer Donald R. Casasanta (1981) were struck and killed by vehicles in the line of duty.
The vision and completion of this dedication was that of Inspector Christian Mathiesen, a 50 year veteran of the department.
Warwick Police Department's K9 Viking will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Viking's vest is sponsored by Charles Scott of Warwick, RI and will be embroidered with the sentiment "A gift of protection donated by Charles R. Scott, Jr". Delivery is expected within eight to ten weeks.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c (3) charity located in East Taunton, MA whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. The non-profit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K9 officers. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 1,800 protective vests, in 49 states, through private and corporate donations, at a cost of over 1.6 million dollars. All vests are custom made in the USA by Armor Express in Central Lake, MI.
The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age. New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.
The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K9 is $1,050.00. Each vest has a value between $1,795 – $2,234 and a five-year warranty, and an average weight of 4-5 lbs. The Warwick Police Department has two K-9 teams: Viking, handled by Officer Aaron Steere, and Fox handled by Officer Paul Wells.
The Warwick Police Department has entered a new direction when it comes to planning for the organization and how it accomplishes its mission. A planning committee was formed to develop this plan from all ranks and divisions of the department to include non-sworn employees. A long term plan was developed going three years into the future to attain objectives that will capitalize on our strengths and improve our weaknesses. The committee used our recently completed COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services) survey to include the public's perceptions and criticisms from an external view.
