The Warwick Police responded to a car and pedestrian accident in the area of 1811 Warwick Avenue at 5:21PM on December 4, 2013. The Traffic Division’s Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident. The accident involved one vehicle operated by Raymond Joutras, a 21 year old male from Sweet Street in Warwick, and the pedestrian, a 49 year old female identified as Juanita Jefferis of Hope Street in Bristol. The pedestrian was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Warwick Fire Rescue where she later died.
The preliminary investigation has disclosed that the operator of the vehicle was travelling south on Warwick Avenue in the area of the Jamestown Apartments and the pedestrian was crossing the road in an easterly direction toward a bus stop when the collision occurred. Investigators are continuing with interviews of the driver, as well as attempting to locate any additional witnesses. At this time neither speed nor alcohol appears to be factors in the collision. The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and due to the time of day the area was fairly dark with minimal lighting. These factors may have played a role in the cause of the collision.
Any person with information related to the accident is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at (401)468-4293.
